The Maltese, also known as the "ancient dog of Malta," is a member of the "toy" category of dogs. The Maltese was first registered as an accepted breed by the American Kennel Club in 1888.

Origin
As the name implies, Maltese dogs originated on the island of Malta and have existed for more than 2,000 years, according to Animal Planet.

Size and Weight
The small, easily portable Maltese. On average, Maltese dogs grow to a height of nine to 10 inches, with an average weight of four to nine pounds.

Show Standards
American Kennel Club standards maintain that a show Maltese must be under seven pounds, with a preferred weight of four to six pounds.

Teacup Terminology
Although the term "teacup," as well as "miniature" and "toy" are used by some breeders to categorize different types of Maltese, no major canine organization recognizes or endorses such terms.

Teacup Size and Weight
According to the Pet Maltese Information Center and other organizations, Maltese dogs that are bred to be smaller in size and weight than the average Maltese are often marketed as "teacup" by certain breeders. Most canine organizations and reputable breeders claim that producing such sizes is unethical and unhealthy and provide warnings to potential customers.
